N.Y.I.A. Play Paul Smiths College to Kick-Off the Season

The Eagles headed up to Paul Smiths College, NY, to play a weekend of back to back games against their Varsity & JV. This marked the first games of the season for the N.Y.I.A. Eagles.

Speaking with Head Coach Polk after the weekends games this is what he had to say:

“… This weekend was a nice test for the team … tough varsity game, it was a good fight. Isiah Benbow had a great game against JV, he led the scoring today with 27 points .. mentally he came into the game and gave all his all … First game jitters but the second game we got into exactly how we wanted to play, fast, get shots … the other team fought back, came back, but Isiah Benbow knocked out a lot of free throws for us.”

We headed over to speak with Paul Smiths JV Head Coach, Coach Pond and this is what he shared with us:

“We battled, it was a game of runs … it was like they couldn’t miss from the free throw line. I felt that when NYIA player #5 hit a couple of BIG 3 point shots and I thought that’s it, then the momentum shifted back to us … it came down to who was making the most free throws and for them they made their free throws.”

We spoke to a couple of New York International Academy players to get their take on this weekends events. Derek Magwood #2 said, “Our team fought to the end it was a great weekend, great games”. N.Y.I.A.’s MVP of the weekend, Isiah Benbow #1 added, “We came together, played hard together and beat the JV team”.

Game 1 Varsity, Zephaniah Esguerra lead the team with 17 pts, 1 ast. 2 rb, Derek Magwood had 16 pts, 7 rb, 2 blks & 2 ast. and Juan Cruz Carriero had 11 pts and 7 rb.

Game 2 JV, Isiah Benbow lead the team with 27 pts, Derek Magwood lead with 18 rebounds and Mark Rodriguez had a great game with 24 points.
